Learning to See Like Mary (Luke 1:46-55)

It's the last Sunday of 2012 and what better way to wrap up the Christmas Season (and the year) than by looking at how Mary is able to see beyond her circumstances to what God is doing in the world through her. Is this how you see God's redemptive activity?

A Kingdom of Love (Luke 1:26-33)

Here we are - already to the fourth week in Advent and the theme is love. This week we look at Mary's response to the news that she is going to become an unwed teenage mother. Is this the response that God really wants from us?

A Kingdom of Joy (Isaiah 59)

How do we experience joy in the midst of so much difficulty and darkness in our lives? In the wake of the school massacre in Newtown, CT, how do we make sense of it? How do we find joy when there's so much evil in this world?

A Kingdom of Peace (Luke 1:8-20, 26-33)

It's the second week of Advent (and the theme is peace). How do we actually experience peace in the midst of darkness and fear? Looking at the characters of Zechariah and Mary (the mother of Jesus) just might teach us something about how the Christmas story ought to bring us peace.

The Keys to the Kingdom (Matthew 16:12-20)

Fellow church planter (and friend) from San Marcos, Texas, shares with us how there's a surprising benefit when the Kingdom of God breaks into this world - God brings order to the places where there is chaos! One of the places God desires order is within the church. Aaron Scott begins to share with us the roadmap towards us becoming a more organized and orderly church.

Family Life in the Kingdom (Matthew 18:15-35)

If the Church is meant to be more like a family than a business, how ought the family function? This passage is all about how to deal with someone in the family who has wronged you.

Kingdom Identity (Matthew 18:1-14)

What's the best thing about you? The thing that gives you a sense of value, purpose, meaning? Or, to flip things around, where do you most feel like a failure? Both of those questions really get at the same thing - where we're locating our sense of identity! This week, we look at how Jesus wants us to answer those questions, by exploring his notion of kingdom identity - how he wants us to see ourselves, how he wants us to view others, and where we find the resources to actually live this way...

The Nature of the Kingdom

We're working through the Gospel of Matthew, looking at what Jesus teaches us about the Kingdom of God. This week, he teaches us how it comes - it's subversive, it's inclusive, it's costly - and he invites us to consider whether our kingdoms look like his...

The Economy of the Kingdom (Mark 12:28-34, 38-44)

We all know Jesus wants us to give away our money. But what does generosity look like in His Kingdom? How does Jesus define generosity and what does he actually expect from his followers?

How the Kingdom is Challenging (Matthew 7:18-27)

Almost everyone loves how inviting and relational Jesus is. But the truth of the matter is that his Kingdom (and moving deeper into it) is incredibly challenging. In fact, what we see this morning is that the Valley of the Shadow of Death is an important destination for every would-be disciple. What do you do with that?

How the Kingdom Advances (Luke 10:1-4, 17-24)

How does the Kingdom of God actually move forward in the world (back then and today)? And what's up with all the signs and miracles (healings, exorcisms, etc) that you see in the New Testament? Is the advancement of God's Kingdom related to the signs of the Kingdom?

Sunday, October 7, 2012

How the Kingdom Goes (Luke 10:1-16)

What is Jesus' strategy for his Kingdom going forward? It's actually for us (disciples and the church) to be little bridges to the world. What that requires is for his Kingdom to push deeper into us.

How the Kingdom Comes (Matthew 4:17-25)

How is Jesus restoring your kingdom with His Kingdom? In this second sermon of the fall series, we consider how Jesus begins to bring renewal into the realms of our personal life, our tribe, and our city.

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Jesus & the Kingdom (Matthew 4:12-25)

Here we go - starting the fall series on the Kingdom of God. This week we look at something that's a little bit shocking - Jesus says that some people are going to miss out on His Kingdom. What's even more surprising is who misses out!

Sunday, September 16, 2012

The Priesthood of Believers (1 Peter 2:4-12)

The OT had prophets, priests & kings, but the NT tells us that every believer is all three. How does this work and what does it look like to live out these roles?

Explorers - Jesus 102

Want to learn more about Jesus, but not sure where to start?
Find the Bible confusing, and churches scary?

Introducing Jesus 102, a group for people who want to learn more about the biblical Jesus. While Jesus 101 focuses on the life & ministry of Jesus contained in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus 102 takes an in-depth look the teachings of Jesus, by examining one of his most famous speeches, The Sermon on the Mount.

In 12 weeks, we'll work through an entire sermon of Jesus - studying it in detail, answering your questions, peeling away the cultural baggage to rediscover how it would have sounded to his original audience. It's a great way to learn more about what Jesus actually claimed, by looking at the sources, rather than settling for second hand opinions.

Explorers groups are geared for non-Christians, new-Christians, and people who aren't even sure what it means to be a Christian. It's for folks who attend All Souls, and folks who don't. You won't be asked to sing, pray, or do anything that would make you feel uncomfortable. You can come as you are; you can say as little or as much as you like.

The goal of these groups is not to convert anyone. Our job is simply to introduce you to the Jesus of Scripture so you can make up your own mind about him. In the process, you will learn a lot about Jesus, Christianity, and your own spirituality. You'll also have a chance to build friendships with interesting people who are asking the same questions you are.

Sound interesting? Here are some details:
  • WHEN: Most Tuesday nights, 6:30 - 8:30 PM. [Begins Sept 18]
  • WHERE: 2307 River Road (look for the mailbox and turn down the alley)
  • FOOD: We provide a main dish, you bring sides, salads, desserts or drinks to share.
If you'd like to know more, please contact Christian (529-5568) for more information.

Sunday Worship

For thousands of years, Christians have gathered weekly to worship Jesus. We do too.

All Souls is a curious little community of friends and faith, where anyone is welcome regardless of your spiritual convictions (or lack thereof). Our desire is to create an atmosphere for Christian worship that is reverent yet accessible, structured yet authentic, grounded in both old and new. We think this is a great way to process the claims of Jesus and to consider our own response to him.

We meet on Sundays @ 10 AM, in the Missoula Children's Theatre (200 N Adams). It's a casual, come-as-you-are environment that still feels surprisingly sacred. There's a nursery for kids, remarkably beautiful music, and lots of interesting folks (many of whom are still feeling their way back into the Christian faith). We sing songs, we say creeds, we wrestle with the Christian Scriptures. You can wear what you like; you can participate as much or as little as you wish. No one's going to ask you for money.

More than anything, we seek to be open and honest about who we are and where we're headed here in Missoula, creating a space where people can thoughtfully engage with the great claims of Christianity. Why not check it out and tell us how we're doing?

Understanding Spiritual Health (Acts 4:32-5:16)

How do you gauge whether or not a church is healthy? This morning we take a look at one of the oddest passages in the New Testament - the story where God kills two people in the church. Why did he do it and how does it connect to spiritual health?
If you're interested in learning how you can get in and participate more deeply at All Souls this fall, then listen to this short "invitation to respond":

Becoming God's House (1 Peter 2:4-12)

Scripture makes some pretty harsh critiques about where we tend to get our identity as humans. But it also offers us a new identity...a new sense of belonging in God's family that can never be taken away. So where's your identity?

Back to School Party

Hey folks, it's official! We're throwing a Back to School Party!

So whether you're heading back to school (or just glad you're NOT heading back to school!), this party is for you: scrumptious hawaiian-burgers hot off the grill, plenty of great beer and wine to wash it all down (would you believe we'll actually have our very own "All Souls House Ale" on tap this time - a custom homebrew by Beau McBryde and Jon Lewis!).

Wow. It should be a fabulous night! Especially if you join us! So here's the skinny...
  • WHEN: Friday, August 31, from 6:30 - 11 PM (or when everyone leaves)
  • WHERE: Christian & Marilyn's place (2307 River Road - look for the mailbox and turn down the alley. Parking on River Road or Luella Lane.)
  • WHAT TO BRING: Your favorite beverage (beer, wine or whatever) -OR- a side to go with burgers, -AND- a friend or two to enjoy it with!
If you've never been to one of our parties, here's your chance to see what you've been missing. It's a great way to catch up with people you haven't seen in a while, and it's a great way to introduce your friends to the All Souls community. Plus the food alone will be worth it!

These are family friendly affairs - and you're welcome to invite your friends! Please RSVP if you're in so we can have an idea how much food to prepare!

The Reality of Resurrection (Col 3:1-17)

Paul claims that there's an aspect of the resurrection that is real in the here and now. Are you experiencing the reality of it?

Sunday, August 19, 2012

The Rhythm of Discipleship (John 15:1-17)

How do we live a truly fruitful life? Not just a life we can be proud of, but one where we love people the way Jesus did - "laying down our lives for our friends"? All of us probably catch glimmers of this in our lives, but how do we sustain this kind of living? Rhythm.

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Becoming Like Peter - 4 (John 21:14-19)

How do you handle failure? More importantly, for followers of Jesus, how does Jesus handle failure? The answer probably won't surprise you (even if you aren't a Christian), but it just might inspire you to think about Him in a different way.

Sunday, August 5, 2012

Becoming Like Peter - 3 (Mark 14:26-29; Luke 22:31-34, 54-62)

Broken promises are the cause of some of our most bitter moments in life. This was also true for the disciple, Peter who broke his promise to Jesus on the night that Jesus was betrayed. How does Jesus redeem broken promises?

Sunday, July 29, 2012

Becoming Like Peter - 2 (Matthew 16:13-24)

We continue to look at Peter as he answers Jesus' most pivotal question, "who do people say that I am?" Sorry about the audio quality this week - we had some technical difficulties. Also, the Scripture reading did not get recorded, so you may want to take a moment and read the text.

Sunday, July 22, 2012

Becoming Like Peter - 1 (Luke 5:1-11)

This week we begin dipping our toes into the Kingdom by looking at Jesus through the eyes of one of the closest disciples - Peter. We'll be thinking about our journey into discipleship as we consider Peter's journey.

Sunday, July 15, 2012

The Call of the Kingdom (Mark 1:14-28)

Over and over Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of God is near. But what does that mean and how do we get in on it? The answer might surprise you.

Sunday, July 8, 2012

Hearing God - the Woman in the Night (Luke 7:36-50)

What does Jesus even want from us anyway? Obedience? Love? In this story we see two people - one misses out on Jesus and the other doesn't. The story just might surprise you.

Beer & Brats Grill Party

We'll provide a keg of excellent beer, some amazing beer brats, and shrimp on the grill! Arts & Culture Series

All Souls Missoula is pleased to announce an Arts & Culture Series for Summer, 2012!

We believe that Art matters - that it influences how we perceive truth, beauty, love, and renewal; that it profoundly shapes our lives and culture. We think Art speaks to our hearts, that it makes great claims about the way things are and the way things ought to be. So we think Art is also deeply linked to spirituality.

This summer we're launching a series of informal discussion groups to explore these connections. Each Friday night we'll experience great art firsthand, and then discuss it together - not as experts, but as friends. We'll watch movies, share stories. We might even have a guest speaker or two. We'll almost certainly throw some parties along the way. It should be a lot of fun.

Why are we doing this? It's not just to enjoy great art (although that's certainly part of it!). We also desire to deepen our understanding of how art shapes culture and influences us: What is it asking us to believe about reality? What hope does it offer? What does it reveal about the artist's worldview? About our own? Most importantly, how might a deeper understanding of art actually foster and fuel our own personal spirituality?

Sound interesting? Here's what's on the schedule...

Hearing God - Jesus & The Woman at the Well (John 4:1-26)

Hearing God by Listening to Jesus (Luke 8:4-21)

Jesus is going to show us that one of the most important spiritual skills we can develop is hearing. The way we hear God's Word (or fail to do so), is one of the biggest factors in how we connect to God. So what does real hearing looking like? How do we get in on it? Join us as we take a fresh look at God by trying to listen well to Jesus...

Signs of Shalom: Spiritual Strength (Eph 6:10-20)

What's the real reason that brokenness and struggle are still the norm? Why is it that we don't experience more shalom? The reason, according to this last passage in the book of Ephesians, is that we are in a spiritual battle. There are forces at work that we cannot see. We need to gear up for battle. This morning we conclude our series on shalom as we look at how we stand strong in this mission for shalom.

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Signs of Shalom: Submission and Authority (Eph 5:20-6:9)

We live in a world where authority structures are present. If we are children, we have parents. If we are employed, we have a boss. But the truth is that we struggle to submit to those in authority over us. This passage helps us learn how Christians are called to live in within these different spheres of submission and authority.

Sunday, April 29, 2012

Signs of Shalom: Thirsting for Discipleship (Luke 14:25-33)

What does Jesus mean when he says that we have to hate our family in order to be his disciple. If that's the case, why would we want to be one? What does it actually mean to be one of Jesus' disciples?

Sunday, April 22, 2012

Signs of Shalom: Celebration! (John 2:1-11)

In this famous story Jesus miraculously changed 150 gallons of ordinary water into the finest wine. What do we do with a story like this? Here at All Souls we think it has everything to do with our view of celebration and undergirds our theology of parties. Want a reason to celebrate? Give it a listen!

Clark Fork Cleanup (2012)

Clark Fork Cleanup - 2010
Hey friends - It's that time of year again! Team up with Imagine Missoula & the Clark Fork Coalition this Saturday to help with the annual river clean-up! Woo hoo!

The past couple of years we've had over 30 volunteers and we cleaned up a BIG chunk of the river just east of the California Street Walking Bridge. This year, it looks like we'll have the same section. And hopefully, there will be even more of us! The cleanup takes about 3 hours, and it's a great way to get together with friends and family to help make our community a better place. Plus there's a BBQ in Caras Park afterward! :-)
  • DETAILS: Meet at Caras Park under the big tent @ 9:45 AM this Saturday, April 21 to find the team and register (Jess Folmar is the point person, and we could use a couple of other folks to help her)
  • RSVP: on facebook or by email (jess.folmar@gmail.com | 552-5297)
  • KIDS: Yes! This is a GREAT event to bring your kids to! They'll have a blast and learn to value our environment at the same time!
That's pretty much it! You can help us by spreading the word and joining us on Saturday! Hope to see you all there! (ps - you can click here to view the photos from last year's cleanup...)

Signs of Shalom: Fearless Giving (Luke 12:13-34)

Jesus calls his followers to have a radically different attitude towards money than the surrounding culture. This week we consider how generosity connects to shalom.

Sunday, April 8, 2012

Why the Resurrection Matters - Easter (1 Cor 15:12-22)

Why do Christians insist that Jesus had to rise from the grave? Why does the resurrection matter?

Friday, April 6, 2012

Good Friday Service

If Good Friday is the day when Christians remember Jesus' brutal death on a Roman cross, how could it possibly be considered "good"? And why on earth would we celebrate it? Great questions! Why not explore them together with us?

We invite you to join us for a dark-yet-beautiful glimpse into one of the oldest of Christian traditions this Friday, April 6 at 7:30 PM as we gather to celebrate a very special Good Friday service in the lobby of the Missoula Children's Theatre (200 N Adams).

The service will be somber and reflective, yet deeply optimistic and hopeful. Regardless of your spiritual convictions (or lack thereof), this is a great chance to work on your own spirituality by considering the claims of Christianity in regard to this seminal moment in human history. Hope to see you there!

Sunday, April 1, 2012

The Purpose of the Triumphal Entry (Luke 19:28-48)

Why did Jesus ride into Jerusalem on a donkey the week of his death? And why do we call it "triumphant"? This week we explore some of these questions as we celebrate Palm Sunday.

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Joseph's Bones (Genesis 50)

What do we take away from the Joseph story? Especially when it comes to the suffering that all of us experience? Where do we find hope? It all depends on how we view the past, present, and future.

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Joseph and the Famine (Genesis 42)

What do you do with some of these passages from the Old Testament? If you read them looking for some sort of principle for living then you'll be sorely disappointed. However, the story of Joseph does show us several different ways of looking at spiritual famine.

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Pharaoh's Dreams (Genesis 41)

We return to our study on Joseph and how God's purpose for humanity plays out in his life. What we see in this story is that history is like a giant jigsaw puzzle that God is putting together one piece at a time. He's fitting people together in the right places at the right time. So where do you fit?

Sunday, March 4, 2012

A Vision for Racial Shalom - Unity in Diversity (1 Cor 12:12-31)

This week both our pastors went AWOL! While they are out of town, we continue to think about shalom with our friend, Mike Kelly. Mike is an elder in our sister church, Gallatin Valley Presbyterian Church, in Bozeman. Mike spends most of his time building relationships and bridges with Native American students on various college campuses.

Sunday, February 26, 2012

Signs of Shalom: Transformation (Ephesians 4:17-32)

One of the primary ways God has given us to recognize a community of shalom is whether or not people are being transformed. As we embark on the season of Lent, it's important to step back and take a look at whether we are experiencing transformation.

Sunday, February 19, 2012

Signs of Shalom: Unity (Ephesians 4:1-16)

Would you recognize shalom if you saw it happening? What are the signs? One of the signs, according to the Apostle Paul, is unity. But what does this word mean? Does it mean we that we all become robots? Or does it mean something else entirely?

Sunday, February 12, 2012

The Priority of Grace (Ephesians 3:1-21)

This week we see how shalom is impossible unless the mystery of grace becomes a reality within our community. Unfortunately, we had technical difficulties with the recording and it is currently unavailable for download! Sorry.

Sunday, January 29, 2012
